Martha’s Vineyard Up Island vs. Down Island

Eastville Beach

One of the first things you’ll likely discuss with your realtor when you begin looking for Martha’s Vineyard vacation rentals or real estate to purchase is whether you wish to live in town or in a more rural area. This is essentially the same as choosing to live “Up Island” or “Down Island”. Derived from maritime roots, West Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah are considered Up Island; while Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs and Edgartown are considered “Down Island”. Down Island happens to be the more populated portion of the island, though there are plenty of private spots both Down Island and Up Island.

You will need to discuss your needs in terms of amenities, location, etc. with your Martha’s Vineyard real estate agent. Because Martha’s Vineyard has such a wealth of different areas with their own entertainment spots, restaurants, beaches, shops, and natural wonders, those interested in purchasing real estate or renting Martha’s Vineyard vacation rentals will have plenty of options to choose from. Perhaps you have a boat or plan to rent one and wish to live by the harbor or maybe you’d prefer to spend your time on Martha’s Vineyard in absolute peace and isolated quiet.
